1985 Mini series depicting the 1911/1912 Scott /Amundsen race for the South Pole. Robert Falcon Scott (Martin Shaw), the British explorer sets out in a flurry of publicity and national pride, intent on being the first to reach the South Pole. He is blissfully unaware that Roald Amundsen (Sverre Anker Ousdal), the Norwegian explorer is setting off too -to rather less fanfare but deeply intent on beating Scott there. As the race heats up, the customarily cautious and caring Scott is transformed into a man guilty of wreckless decision and ill- treatment of his men. Pulling sledges by hand after the questionably necessary dispatch of their dog teams, the Brits suffer greatly in the unaccustomed arctic climate whilst the Norsemen, well hardened to icy conditions, romp to the pole weeks ahead and with full teams of dogs still doing the grunt work.
